We want to make sure that if you get involved in this hobby, you know what to expect.
Long term membership in the chorus requires an audition. We'd like you to attend 3-6 rehearsals before considering an audition. This will give you a chance to practice with us and see how you feel about a cappella singing. Generally, auditions are held the first Monday of the month, after rehearsals. You can pick one of the songs we've been singing that you feel comfortable with and you'll sing as part of a quartet for the director only. Your section lead will stand behind you to help if you need it.
Once you've passed your audition you'll need to become a member of both the
International Sweet Adelines organization and the local Region 13 Chapter. Fees for International are $80 and will be due each year on your anniversary date. Your $25 Regional fees will be built into your tuition and will be paid by the chorus. Young Women in Harmony (those under 25) pay only half!
Each month we collect $35 in tuition from each member. This goes to cover costs common to the whole chorus. This includes purchasing music, paying the director, rehearsal space, competition fees, administrative costs, regional dues, etc.
At this point we have three costumes, the first is a casual one that includes a t-shirt (around $10) and your own white or black pants (depending on the season). Our two contest costumes are either the new teal tops or the gold and black tops. Both of these use the same black pants. You can purchase the teal top, but the black and gold top and the black pants are individually made after you become a member. Between costuming and shoes you can expect to pay $150. You will sew own your black and gold costume. (If you aren't able to make your own, there will be an additional sewing fee). This will not be all at once and not all paid to the chorus. If you leave the chorus you'll be able to keep the costume or sell it back to the chorus for half price.
We are planning to compete in the regional competition next year in April in Spokane. You can be a part of Voices Northwest and choose not to compete but much of Jan - April is very focused on our competition pieces.
There are numerous opportunities for leadership and participation in the chorus. We have committees for marketing, social events, facilities, competition, etc. If you'd like to help we'd love to introduce you to our committe leaders!
